Lighting, Art + Science is a unique blend of aesthetic understanding of light and the technical knowledge of calculations and computer modelling, light fixture selection, regulatory requirements with electrical engineering and controls designs. Our diverse team brings together a wealth of experience and knowledge from a variety of backgrounds including pure lighting design, electrical engineering, manufacturing, sales and distribution, visual arts, architecture, civil engineering, lighting education and standards committees.

We are a passionate team dedicated to providing the very best service in Lighting and Electrical Engineering Design. Our team is highly qualified and experienced, and we understand that our services are complementary to our clients. We aim to deliver excellence by exceeding expectations and meeting agreed deliverables at a reasonable cost in a friendly and collaborative spirit.

Our team is led by Richard Mason, an Electrical Engineer and Director with over 20 years' experience in the design of electrical services. He has extensive project experience including new commercial towers, tenancy fit-out, data centres, building refurbishment, maintenance upgrades, exterior lighting and condition reporting. His practical experience obtained during many years of design, review of contractor proposals and at commissioning/client handover testing ensures that the systems designed are buildable, have a long service life and function to the client's expectations.

We also have Dianna Abdalla, a Senior Lighting Designer with a long history of providing specialist lighting design and documentation for a wide range of projects. She has lighting design experience in the following areas, Commercial Office, Fitout & Base Building Design, Retail, Education, TfNSW, Sports' Facility Lighting, Street & Area Lighting and Facade Lighting. Dianna holds a Master of Architectural Science (Illumination) from the University of Sydney, and was awarded the Dean's Excellence Award 2014, 2015 as well as the Philips Lighting Award 2014.

Maria Albuquerque, a Senior Lighting Designer, has been with us since 2014. She holds a Master of Design Science (Illumination Design) from the University of Sydney and was awarded the Dean's Excellence Award 2013 as well as the Philips Lighting Award 2013 and the Australian Institute of Building NSW Chapter President's Award 2014. Maria also holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil). Her experience in construction companies as a civil engineer gives her an unique insight into the building industry. Her principal role is technical exterior lighting designer on projects from concept through to full documentation.

Our founder, Peter McLean, a Senior Lighting Designer, retired in December 2023. He has nearly 50 years of experience and has been an invaluable resource. He has lectured in Lighting at University of Sydney and Queensland University of Technology. Throughout his career, Peter has been involved in a wide spectrum of projects from public domain lighting to high-end residential projects.

Our Services

At Lighting, Art + Science, we offer a range of services including concept design development, full tender and construction documentation through to fully certified street and pedestrian lighting designs. We can provide anything from high-end interiors, residential, commercial fit-out, hospitality, government facilities, museums, sports lighting, urban precincts, energy efficiency reviews and the lighting of artwork.

We are able to offer a full Electrical Engineering consultancy independently or as part of our lighting design portfolio. Our team is dedicated to producing installations that are visually interesting, comfortable to occupy, complementary to the architecture and urban design whilst satisfying the technical, safety and maintainability requirements.
